Build for Habitat for Humanity:

A New Look Exteriors is a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity. As a company, we believe in Habitat’s mission to provide a safe and affordable place to live for all people regardless of race or religion. In the past, A New Look has donated windows and doors to Habitat’s Restore, but this year we decided we wanted to be more involved. Our company volunteered for a build day on Wednesday March 31st. We assisted in sheeting the roof for the home and in the installing of four windows, one of which was an egress.

We had a blast learning more about Habitat and working with their amazing core crew volunteers. Being a core crew volunteer means that you are assisting with a build anywhere from once a week to once a month. A couple of the guys we worked with volunteer every Wednesday! They do so rain or shine as long as the project manager is on site. We loved getting to know them and working alongside their amazing work ethic. We hope to continue doing quarterly volunteer days or maybe become more involved in other ways in the future. More on Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity:

Habitat is a Christian, nonprofit that has provided a home for over 2,000 families since 1986. Greater Des Moines Habitat is one affiliate out of more than 1,200 affiliates. In 2020, they did 229 repairs, and service projects alone! The end goal is to provide valuable knowledge to home buyers and create safe, affordable homes for the low income population in the Des Moines Metro area.

Habitat focuses on a helping hand up, not a hand out. Homeowners are responsible for a down payment and monthly mortgage payments. However, these mortgages are very low interest and Habitat does not profit from them. Additionally, homeowners have to invest a certain number of hours in their home’s build (sweat equity). Habitat also offers counseling courses to assist homeowners to help them understand the buying processes, the loan process, and what owning a home will look like for them.

Since opening doors in 1986, GDM Habitat has built over 400 homes from start to finish.
